《咸的玩笑》的责编徐子茼说，人民文学出版社开始跟进这本新书的时候，刘震云已经处在创作的后半程了，“这也是刘老师的创作习惯，他一开始酝酿构思的时间比较长，一旦开始动笔就一气呵成。完稿后，他还要自己再修改几遍才会给到编辑，等我们看到小说的时候，就已经是非常整齐的作品了。”《咸的玩笑》的创作前后历时四年，有三年时间都花在了构思上。
